Find the cold water shut-off valve on top of the water heater and turn it clockwise. If you can't reach it or it's stuck, turn off the main water supply to the house. That single valve stops most water heater floods before they spread. Learn where it is now rather than at two in the morning. It sits on the cold inlet at the top of the water heater. Tag it now so anyone in the home can find it fast. Two minutes today saves a soaked floor later. Do the same for the gas valve and the breaker while you are at it.
If it's electric, flip the breaker labeled "water heater" in your electrical panel. If it's gas, turn the gas valve on the unit to the "off" position. Don't touch the gas line itself. Killing the power stops the heater dry-firing, which is what ruins an element in minutes. A gas unit will keep firing on an empty cylinder too, which cracks the glass lining.
Use towels, buckets, or a shop vac to contain the water and prevent it from spreading to other areas of your home. Water travels along joists, so check the room next door and the ceiling below before you assume the spread has stopped. Hot water does more damage to flooring than cold does. It also carries whatever sediment was sitting in the heater.
